Computer vision syndrome? Yes, it’s a thing. And while the term was coined before smartphones became ubiquitous, it can come from using any kind of digital device, and even if you consider yourself a moderate user. Just two hours of screen time a day can take its toll. Digital eye strain can translate to body pain, not just eye issues. It can even contribute to premature aging. That doesn’t mean you have to give up your computer and device use. There are some things that you can do to minimize or prevent digital eye strain.
Signs of Digital Eye Strain
Digital eye strain can cause:
- Dry eyes
- Irritated eyes
- Tired eyes
- Puffy eyes
- Dark circles under your eyes
- Bags under your eyes
- Difficulty focusing
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Headaches
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
How to Avoid Digital Eye Strain
Try these tips:
- Give your eyes frequent breaks. Look off into the distance, about 20 feet, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes.
- Move your body around every 30 minutes. Get up and walk around if you can. If not, try some neck and shoulder rolls in your seat.
- Be mindful of screen position. That includes not hunching over your phone or tablet. Hold it up close to eye level.
- Have balanced lighting. Adjust the lighting on your screen and in the room so that they are fairly equal.
- Remember to blink and do it often.
- Talk to your eye doctor about computer glasses, even if you don’t use prescription lenses.
- If you’re using an old-style computer monitor, get a modern one.
